The Next Moment Is Not Guaranteed

There are moments that make all the difference in the world. You cannot give up any moment in your life because, as I learned that day, you may not have another. We need to make the best of each moment, do the right thing, and stay true to our values and mission. Sometimes, the choices are easy; sometimes, they are painful. Knowing the right thing to do is the first step; doing the right thing is the second.

Take, for example, when I got into that fight in seventh grade with the kid who was teasing the special needs boy called Captain John Smith. I was a new kid in school, and these boys picked on this young man with special mental and physical needs. No one was stepping up for him, so I did. I took action immediately and threw a punch. The bully and I then got into a fight in the hallway.

It was necessary at that moment to step up for him. I think I connect so well with military members and first responders because they help those who cannot help themselves. That is a belief I have had ever since I was a kid: you step up. However, I was reprimanded. I was hauled down to the principal’s office by the athletic director, who was also my football coach. One of the things I learned, though, is that you have to stand up for people who cannot stand up for themselves.

This is why I hate bullying so much. I do not care if you are the smallest or biggest guy, or if you are the government or just a person on the street. You must stand up to bullies because they are the ones taking advantage of people, including those who let them get away with it.

This is why I get so agitated by what is going on in the world right now. There is a lot of bullying happening everywhere you look, and I wish I could step up for it all. At that moment, for that young man, it was important for someone to stand in front of him and take the punch, whatever the consequences, because it was the right thing to do.

There will be times in our lives when the world makes things important and immediate for us. Our fathers tell us that we must pay our tuition effective immediately; someone is frozen in shock and needs help; the plane starts to sink into the water, and another person is being bullied and beaten. Such moments come with their own urgency; they demand that you decide right now.

The situation does not need to be so immediately dire to be important, though. Your significant other can inform you that you must decide between your current career path and your ongoing relationship with them. Or, someone can offer you a lot of money for a business you have built yourself and love being a part of. Or, your friend can suggest going out for a drink instead of staying in and studying.
